How yoga builds resilience: Scientific insights into cold tolerance and physiological strength
Yoga is often celebrated for its ability to increase flexibility and calm the mind, but recent scientific findings suggest its benefits reach far deeper - right down to the body’s core ability to adapt to physical stress.

A fascinating study involving healthy men in their 40s explored this idea by comparing two groups: one practicing a daily routine of Hatha yoga (including classic asanas, breathing exercises, and meditation) and another following a standard physical training program. After six months, both groups were exposed to a chilly 10°C environment for two hours. Researchers closely monitored their heart rates, breathing, body temperatures, and even the onset and intensity of shivering.
The results were eye-opening. While everyone experienced a drop in body temperature, the yoga group managed to maintain a higher core temperature throughout the cold exposure. Shivering - a natural response to cold - was not only delayed in the yoga group but also less intense. This suggests that their bodies were producing heat more efficiently, relying less on muscle contractions and more on subtle metabolic processes. In scientific terms, this is known as nonshivering thermogenesis, where the body generates heat through metabolism rather than by shivering.
What’s even more remarkable is that the yoga practitioners also showed a more efficient metabolic response overall. Their increases in oxygen consumption and breathing rate were lower compared to the physically trained group. Over the six months, the yoga group also improved their heart health and muscular endurance, as seen in reduced heart rate, oxygen consumption, and blood lactic acid during exercise.
The yoga sequence used in the study was accessible and familiar to many: fifteen classic postures such as Padmasana, Sarvangasana, Halasana, and Shavasana, each held for about two minutes with a focus on relaxation and mindful breathing. This routine, practiced daily, was enough to trigger significant changes in how the body responds to cold.
These findings reveal something truly novel: you don’t need to be an advanced yogi or live an ascetic lifestyle to unlock these benefits. Even short-term, regular yoga practice can enhance the body’s ability to tolerate cold, making the adaptation accessible to anyone willing to commit to a consistent routine. The research challenges the assumption that only lifelong or extreme yoga practice can yield such powerful physiological effects.
